One (More) Reason Why You Want an Experienced Photographer - Newborn Session

Newborn sessions are the best. I’ve said this before, but as a photographer it is such a privilege to meet so many new humans and bear witness to the overwhelming amount of joy and love parents feel during those first initial days. But Newborn Photography Sessions can also have some challenges: babies can be fuzzy, parents can be exhausted, house pets may be running around, diaper changes, feedings, and so on. It is definitely fun.

One other thing that may impact an indoor photoshoot, even though you probably wouldn’t think about it, is the weather. Let me explain. 

Though it may not always be possible, I try to shoot all my home sessions with natural light. In fact, one of the first things I do when I arrive to a home, is to turn off all overhead lighting to avoid the yellow-y colorcast that results from some type of lightbulbs. But what if in the middle of a session the daylight changes dramatically?

Take this session, for example. We were in the middle of photographing this adorable baby girl, when a major storm came in making it very dark outside. This obviously affected my availability of natural light, and though I could have pulled out my flashes and portable lighting setup that I keep in my car, I did not want to waste time and risk waking up a baby that had just fallen asleep. So instead, the parents and I moved to the one room in the house with the biggest window (their dining room), and for the rest of the session we took our photos… on the floor. Under the window. You wouldn’t think so by looking at these images, right? 

I guess the takeaway here is that an experienced photographer should keep calm in unexpected situations and come up with creative solutions for problems that may come up. We can’t control everything, but we can use our skills and knowledge to problem-solve and turn in beautiful images for our clients, that they can treasure forever.
