My favorite Props for a Sitter Session

Props during baby photography are important because they serve a couple of main functions. First, they keep babies entertained and engaged, so that the resulting images are dynamic and authentic. Second, they serve as a point of reference to see how small our children are.

Here are some of my favorite props to use during sitter sessions:

(1) Wooden blocks

(2) Wooden pull toys

(3) Blankets - can be used under baby for added texture to your images, or to cover their heads - sometimes they play peekaboo and you can get very cute pictures

(4) Rattles, which I also use to call baby’s attention and get him or her to look at me.

(5) Balloons - always a crowd pleaser!

(6) Balls or wooden objects of appropriate size - most of the time they end up in baby’s mouth, but that makes for adorable images

(7) Stuffed animals

Not shown in these images are other props I use to call baby’s attention, including:

  • Rattles and anything that makes a sound

  • Cat toys wands, are surprisingly effective at getting the baby to look up when they are on their back

  • Small stuffed animals in bright colors that I throw in the air for some giggles

  • Small cereal puffs and snacks that you can put on the floor to get baby to crawl or stay put in one place

What are some of your favorite photography props for little kids?
