Why You Should Consider Taking Self-Portraits | Chicago Headshot Photographer
One of my photography goals of this year was to get in front of the camera more, and within that goal I wanted to do a lot more self-portraits. Believe it or not, this can be as hard for me as it is for other people.
First, it’s difficult to find the time within my busy life to do it. Second, even when I find the time, I have to admit that I am somewhat self-conscious about it. Crazy for being a photographer! I know. But I am definitely more comfortable behind the camera than in front of it.
Yet invariably every other month I look through my photos and realize that I am not in enough of them. This both saddens me and encourages me to prioritize it.
So, here we are. I am sharing a few self-portraits that I took last week. I wanted to get some newer headshots for my website, which are the ones taken in my studio with the white background, and then I wanted to play with shadows and get a “moodier” feel, which is what I was going for with the black background.
While you scroll through these, let me take this opportunity to encourage you to take more photos of yourself too:
You deserve it
You are beautiful
It’s actually fun!
You want to remember this time of your life
Confidence is like a work-out. The more you do it, the more you force yourself to get out of your comfort zone, the more confident you get
And if that is not enough, then keep in mind you don’t have to show it to other people and these images may just be something you decide to treasure in private – and treasure them you will

If you are in need of some additional reasons to get in some photos, check out this past blog post I wrote on the topic.
A wonderful alternative to consider to Fall family are beach family sessions. I generally take these in the month of August during sunset hours and I have to say they are by far my most fun sessions. We always get wet, and inevitably everything gets sandy, but the pictures are for sure worth it. Kids just adore the silliness and the permission to run in an open space, jump in the water, dance around, and chase their parents, and so what results are truly joyful expressions that are so much more genuine than traditional posed photos.
