What to Wear to a Spring Photo Session

Potentially the question that I hear most often from my clients is: what should I wear to my photo session?

This may seem trivial, but if you are making an investment in getting some nice images of yourself and/or your family you may want to purposely select what you will be wearing. After all, the images will remain forever. In general, I really think that clothing choices can make-or-break your portraits and so as part of my services I either offer my clients a brief consultation on wardrobe selection or provide styling boards for inspiration.

If you are planning to take photos this Spring season, I would recommend selecting either neutral or pastel colors, mixed with soft patterns. These colors are classic and don’t go out of style. Small pops of colors look great as well, but you will want to keep the majority of your outfits muted, versus saturated/vibrant colors.

Here are some spring styleboards I have put together to provide more inspiration. Most of the kids clothes come from Zara, H&M, JCrew, and Old Navy.

For women and girls, I recommend flowy dresses, jumpsuits, or blouses with pants. Light sweaters can always be added for layering. For boys and men I recommend rolled up shirts, khaki pants or chinos. While I don’t usually recommend wearing denim, I know some families like it, and so if wearing denim, a light-wash always looks better than a dark one. Finally, always think about finishing your outfits with careful selection of shoes.

Families and groups should try to stay within the same color palette. You want to complement each other’s outfits by choosing colors that work well together but avoid being matchy-matchy and looking like you are in uniform.

If all these outfits got you excited for some family photos, then check out this event that I will be having in at the end of April. It is the perfect opportunity to get a taste for working with a professional photography, without paying for a full session, and also a great gift in time for mother’s day.
